What is what3words?
How it works
You may never of heard of it, so what exactly is what3words? Well, what3words is a really simple way to talk about location. It’s given every 3 metre square in the world a unique 3 word address, meaning you can refer to any precise location – from the exact spot you got married to the front door of your first home – with just three words. You can find your location at what3words.com or via the app for iOS and Android.
A Brief History
Chris Sheldrick co-founded what3words in London in 2013. Having managed music events worldwide he noticed how bands frequently got lost finding venues because of inadequate addresses. The need for such a simple, memorable and accurate location service is clear. 70% of addresses around the world fail to get you to the door with this having a knock on effect for deliveries and services as well as the financial inefficiencies, see press release. The Universal Postal Union estimates 75% of developing countries’ address systems are badly maintained or do not even exist. Businesses, government agencies and NGOs in over 170 countries use what3words addresses to overcome these problems, including emergency services, logistics, post and travel.
